    Hi (sorry I don't know your name). One of the guys in the back (in white pants) is Brian, one of my training partners at Brooklyn Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu; he is an AWESOME guy and a high-level Black Belt (an absolute pleasure to roll with on the mat!). I got my purple belt about a year ago, and also started teaching the basic classes about 3-4 months ago. Would love to get a friendly roll with you one of these days as I will be turning 50 in November, so will officially "join" the Jits Over 50 soon (for now just joined your channel that I find excellent and very beneficial especially for beginners as your narration helps them make sense of what is happening on the mat). Oss, Aleks

    In Portuguese (the language spoken in Brazil, where Jiu-Jitsu from Japan mutated/evolved into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), the word "professor" literally translates to "teacher." For example, kids in grade school call their teachers "Professor." Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students call their Sensei "Professor." Brazilians came to the US to teach Jiu-Jitsu, and the title continued, as both Brazilians and Americans understood the term (though it has a different connotation in English). My first Jiu-Jitsu professor was a world champion in BJJ; he said, "Call me 'coach.'" That's all that "Professor" originally meant, in the Jiu-Jitsu context.

    Hey man, I have a question for you. I noticed that when you roll with people (and Billy does this here too), sometimes you look away, as though you're not relying on your eyesight to see what your opponent is doing, but rather using peripheral sight? Is that some kind of technique? Greetings from Croatia, from one stripe white belt. Love your vids, and keep up the good work.

    • @Jitsover50
      @Jitsover50 День тому

      Thank you as always. Yes I look away to just feel. I only do this when there is a connection established. I'm not using the force but it feels similar. Try it the next time someone is in your guard. Especially closed guard when just starting off

    • @Jitsover50
      @Jitsover50 3 дні тому

      So the defense for the double eye poke can be seen on the Three Stooges. lol. Seriously though. Just roll in a less competitive manner. When I roll with a young blue/purple belt competitor I usually let them pass my guard. Because fighting to retain guard against a younger stronger opponent leads to injuries.

    That is not aggressive, he's just a little nervous because he's rolling with someone much more experienced. I have zero tolerance for people being overly aggressive but I equally cannot stand people being absolute limp dicks. BJJ is contact sport, you're not in the office.

  • @britbongj
    @britbongj 4 дні тому

    Had my first BJJ class and we did some sparring, I think I went in far too aggressive and fast, tried to apply some of what the class taught but my brain just went to fight or flight and ignored anything. Is this normal for beginners?

    • @Jitsover50
      @Jitsover50 4 дні тому

      Hey Josh! That is great to hear! I ask this respectfully. Have you had a real fist fight? MY theory is a lot of people that start training BJJ never had an actual fight. So they conflate rolling jiu-jitsu for an actual fight. I don't even like when people refer to their matches as fights. So try and remind yourself this isn't a fight to the death. It is a place to learn and grow. And that fast aggressive movements can lead to life altering injuries. Though there are huge risks in the beginning before one learns how fragile they really are. The more actual skill you acquire based on leverage and frames, the safer it becomes.

    The degree of study, commitment, and depth of understanding to obtain a black belt in BJJ and teach it is comparable to obtaining a doctoral degree. Each takes many years and, most importantly, a BJJ professor understands the "why" behind their technique. Why it works, why it sometimes doesn't work, and how to bridge that gap. I'm happy to call my BJJ teacher Professor. ETA: Doesn't professor simply mean teacher in Romance languages (such as Portuguese)?

    Having to purchase a car makes me ill. It's the worst financial investment you can make. I have always bought 10-15 year old, solid cars that get me around. There are a ton of other things I'd rather invest my money in. Like more Jiu jitsu classes.

    Problem with these types of guys is that they end up injuring their training partners all the time because they only have this one speed which is berserk er mode. Nice control, I aspire to be able to do the same.
